The federal Transportation Security Administration backed away from its announced Jan. 18 deadline for commercial airports to take over security along exit lanes.

TSA personnel will continue to provide exit lane security, with no specific new deadline in place, but will gradually transition the work over to airport employees, TSA spokesman Christopher White said.

The agency had said last October that it wanted out of the exit lane duty, which it assumed because the private companies that handled airport screening before the Sept. 11 attacks also patrolled exit lanes.

Now, however, "it is crucial for the TSA to use its limited resources for the primary mission of screening passengers and their baggage," White said.

While airports can opt for security officers or technology to watch over exit lanes, the TSA must approve their approach first.
