Governor Awards $9.5 Million to Fund Repair Projects at 20 Pa. Airports

The 20 local airports across Pennsylvania will be able to improve safety and service - and generate new economic-development opportunities.

HARRISBURG , Pa., April 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Pennsylvania Governor Edward G. Rendell today said 20 local airports across the state will be able to improve safety and service - and generate new economic-development opportunities - with Pennsylvania's investment of more than $9.5 million to help pay for critical renovation and repair projects.

"Maintaining and improving our airport system is an investment in safety and a boost to the economic vitality of local economies and the state," Governor Rendell said. "Airports, both large and small, are economic catalysts that provide communities with thousands of jobs and billions of dollars in economic benefits each year."

The airports will use the money to replace runway lighting, acquire land for future airport development, rehabilitate runways, buy snow removal equipment and install navigational aids, among other upgrades. Funding comes from the Federal Aviation Administration and PennDOT's Bureau of Aviation.

Beaver County Airport (Beaver Falls, Beaver County) - $178,742 for the construction of a stormwater management system.

Zelienople Municipal Airport (Zelienople, Beaver County) - $146,250 to install navigational aids and replace runway lighting.

Bedford County Airport (Bedford, Bedford County) - $112,125 to purchase snow removal equipment.

Bradford County Airport (Towanda, Bradford County) - $117,000 to acquire land for future airport development.

Butler County Airport (Butler, Butler County) - $877,500 to rehabilitate the runway and taxiway and to install runway lighting.

Brandywine Airport (West Chester, Chester County) - $565,500 to rehabilitate the runway.

Clarion County Airport (Clarion, Clarion County) - $1,673,749 to expand the runway and to design taxiway rehabilitation.

Clearfield-Lawrence Airport (Clearfield, Clearfield County) - $1,014,000 to construct a parallel taxiway and acquire snow removal equipment.

William T. Piper Memorial Airport (Lock Haven, Clinton County) - $185,250 to acquire land and necessary easements to remove hazardous obstructions.

Bloomsburg Municipal Airport (Bloomsburg, Columbia County) - $153,947 to design a runway extension and realignment.

Port Meadville Airport (Meadville, Crawford County) - $97,500 to install navigational aids.

Indiana County-Jimmy Stewart Airport (Indiana, Indiana County) - $877,500 to design runway improvements.

Punxsutawney Municipal Airport (Punxsutawney, Jefferson County) - $175,500 to rehabilitate the rotating beacon and windsock and to install an automated weather observation system.

New Castle Municipal Airport (New Castle, Lawrence County) - $780,488 to rehabilitate hangar taxi lanes, aprons and ramps, to acquire snow removal equipment, to install perimeter fencing and to acquire security equipment.

Hazleton Municipal Airport (Hazleton, Luzerne County) - $1,950,000 to rehabilitate the runway.

Wilkes-Barre/Wyoming Valley Airport (Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne County) - $117,000 to design a parallel taxiway.

Grove City Airport (Grove City, Mercer County) - $97,500 to acquire snow removal equipment.

Penn Valley Airport (Selinsgrove, Snyder County) - $150,000 to install navigational aids.

Somerset County Airport (Somerset, Somerset County) - $175,500 to design extensions of the runway and parallel taxiway.

Washington County Airport (Washington, Washington County) - $73,126 to design a widening of the runway.
