GREEN, Ohio, April 27 /PRNewswire/ -- After nearly three years of planning, design, and construction, Akron-Canton Airport's (CAK) new concourse is on final approach. Starting next Tuesday, May 2, 2006 , AirTran Airways' passengers will board their aircraft from brand new second-level boarding gates. "We have been eagerly awaiting this day," said airport director Fred Krum . "The new space will enhance the experience our customers rave about; short walks, clean spacious restrooms, lots of windows and a greater sense of calm."

The new concourse features four gates, a soaring glass atrium with a signature compass rose terrazzo inlay, bamboo and stainless steel finishes and lots more room for passengers to stretch out. Coming later this summer, a new food court with an Arby's(R) and T.J. Cinnamon. Complimentary Wi-Fi Internet access, a tremendously popular service with our customers, will be extended to the new concourse.

AirTran Airways will operate from three of the four gates in the new second-level concourse. Frontier Airlines will begin operating from the fourth gate in July. The new north gates, opening later this summer, will be home to United Express and Northwest Airlink. Delta Connection and US Airways Express passengers will have lots more legroom in the existing gates.

The airport embarked on the new terminal project largely because of new passenger traffic generated by low-fare juggernaut AirTran Airways' growth at CAK. For the first quarter of 2006, nearly 340,000 origination and destination passengers used CAK, a seven percent increase compared to 317,000 for the first three months of 2005.

The new concourse is the central component of the third phase of the $60million, five-year STAR expansion project launched in 2001. The first two phases of STAR included longer runways, a new baggage claim wing, additional car parking and a food court with national brands. Additional information including downloadable music, flight reservations and driving instructions is available at www.akroncantonairport.com, CAK's new web portal.
