Jeffco Airport in Denver Takes on New Name

Next year, Jefferson County Airport will be officially rechristened the Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport.

County commissioners agreed Tuesday to change the name. The idea has been kicked around as the county pursues development at and near the airport.

Commissioners said they wanted to register the name as quickly as possible because a developer of land south of the Fort Collins/Loveland Airport has suggested renaming that airport Rocky Mountain Regional Airport.

Airport manager Kenny Maenpa said the word "regional" connotes a more remote airport, while "municipal" indicates the airport is small.

"Metropolitan," Maenpa said, "identifies the airport as being a city area, a population area where there is business and a lot of activity."

One thing that won't change is the airport's three-letter "identifier:" BJC, for Broomfield Jefferson County.

The airport, southwest of U.S. 36 and Wadsworth Boulevard, has a Broomfield mailing address but is in Jefferson County.
