Delta Air Lines to Recall Another 200 Pilots

Delta Air Lines Inc. is recalling another 200 pilots currently on furlough as it continues its international expansion and plans to acquire new aircraft.

The No. 3 U.S. carrier, which is operating under bankruptcy protection, said Wednesday it will recall the pilots next year.

That would be on top of roughly 250 previously furloughed pilots that have been recalled since June 2005, the Atlanta-based company said.

There are approximately 360 pilots currently on furlough, Delta spokeswoman Betsy Talton said.

Delta said it has new flying opportunities due to its international expansion and planned acquisition of 13 Boeing 757 aircraft.

The airline also has been recalling maintenance workers and flight attendants to support its operations.

Delta hopes to emerge from Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization in the first half of next year as a standalone company. The carrier faces a hostile bid by Tempe, Arizona-based US Airways Group Inc. to buy it in a deal now valued at $8.5 billion (euro6.46 billion).
