A pregnant New York teenager was arrested on suspicion of trying to smuggle 50 small bags of heroin to the United States in her bra and pants, authorities said Monday.

The 16-year-old, who is eight months pregnant, was pulled aside and searched at Las Americas airport Sunday night when she became nervous and agitated while going through customs, Dominican drug agency spokesman Roberto LeBron said.

The teen was allegedly carrying about 600 grams (21 ounces) of heroin, which Dominican authorities estimated to be worth at least US$25,000 (euro19,200).

The girl will be transferred to a juvenile prosecutor on Tuesday, LeBron said.
