Jan. 17 -- It's the new best way to see the Fort Wayne International Airport. At 210 feet tall, the airport's new flight control tower is more than 100 feet higher than the current one.
The Federal Aviation Administration introduced the $9.7 million structure at an open house for the media Tuesday. Including equipment and furnishings, the tower cost about $14 million
It will be commissioned Saturday, when airport personnel make an overnight move into the new tower. Construction ran about six months behind schedule because of weather delays and fine-tuning to the tower's heating and air-conditioning units.
The new tower will not mean new jobs because staffing is based on air-traffic levels. The tower will be home to air-traffic controllers and 12 maintenance workers.
The current tower, built in 1976 for $2.3 million, stands 100 feet high. Airport officials have said that tower will be torn down at a future date.
