JERUSALEM_A mid-air collision between Israeli and Spanish airliners was averted before sundown Thursday, an airport official said.
An El Al Israel Airlines plane was approaching the runway for landing when an Iberian Airlines plane suddenly turned into its path, said Arieh Gilad, an official with the Israel Airports Authority, in an interview with Channel 2 TV.
The Israeli airliner managed to avoid the other plane, he said, when they were around two kilometers (a mile and a half) apart, 20 seconds from a collision, he said.
