Sun Country Schedule Expanding with 2 New Boeing 737s

April 6, 2007
The carrier now operates a permanent fleet of seven planes. Over the winter season, Sun Country has been leasing an extra six planes.

Starting this summer, Twin Cities travelers will have more flight options for reaching major East Coast and West Coast destinations on Sun Country Airlines.

The low-fare carrier will take delivery of a new Boeing 737 in July that will allow the airline to fly twice daily to Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Sun Country's schedule will be expanded again in August, when a second new 737 allows it to fly three times a day to New York's Kennedy Airport and twice a day to Washington's Dulles Airport.

Business and leisure travelers are both expected to take advantage of the broader schedule, Jim Olsen, Sun Country's chief operating officer, said Tuesday.

Sun Country, which was purchased last year by Petters Group Worldwide and Whitebox Advisors, is pursuing a strategy of "conservative growth," Olsen said.

The Mendota Heights-based company flies from Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport to 14 cities year-round and several more warm-weather cities during the winter. With the additional planes, Olsen said Sun Country is "trying to make the schedule more convenient for everybody that likes to use Sun Country."

The carrier now operates a permanent fleet of seven planes. Over the winter season, Sun Country has been leasing an extra six planes; they will be returned to Transavia in the Netherlands by the end of this month.

Northwest Airlines also flies nonstop to the four cities - Los Angeles, San Francisco, Washington and New York - where Sun Country will add one flight per day to its schedule.
