Airlines welcome ruling on Los Angeles airport charges

Airlines operating at Los Angeles International Airport have said they are pleased with a recommended decision by the Administrative Law Judge in favour of the airlines.

AirTran Airways, Alaska Airlines, ATA Airlines, Frontier Airlines, Midwest Airlines, Southwest Airlines and US Airways Group issued a statement saying that the ruling "upholds clear and long-standing principles of law that are designed to protect consumers and air carriers from excessive, unreasonable and discriminatory payments for the use of an essential public facility".

The airlines filed a joint complaint with the United States Department of Transportation (DOT) in February regarding new terminal charges at the airport that were said to dramatically increase the airlines' costs.

A final decision by the Secretary of Transportation is expected by 15 June 2007.
