Suspicious Package a False Alarm

July 2, 2007

A suspicious package that forced the evacuation yesterday of the American Airlines terminal at Kennedy Airport turned out to be a bottle of cologne, police said.

The package was found on a curb at 10:20 a.m., said Steve Coleman, a spokesman for the Port Authority.

New York police investigators determined later that the package contained the cologne, a police official reported at noon.

The Port Authority, which operates Kennedy and LaGuardia airports in New York and Newark Liberty in New Jersey, took "a number of measures as we always do to respond to security situations immediately" after an apparent terrorist attack at the airport in Glasgow, Scotland, Coleman said.

It was not clear how many people were evacuated, but operations at Kennedy were normal.
