TSA announces increased security measures at U.S. airports

Transportation Security Administration officials today announced increased security measures at U.S. airports, including Salt Lake City International, after car bomb incidents in London and Glasgow.

The United Kingdom is on high security alert, while the United States is on "orange," the second-lowest security status.

The TSA said "there is nothing to suggest attacks in the UK indicate an attack in the U.S. However, many airports and mass transit systems in the United States are increasing their security presence as a precaution."

Barbara Gann, spokeswoman for Salt Lake City International, said airline passengers should be prepared for random vehicle searches as they enter the airport.

Airport officials are asking passengers or those picking up travelers to allow extra time for this possibility and suggest motorists clean their vehicles prior to entering the airport to streamline the process.

Passengers around the nation likely will see increased police activity and more bomb-sniffing dogs, said the TSA. Airport officials were told to put travelers on notice to be "extra vigilant" and report unattended baggage or suspicious behavior to airport police, airline representatives or security screening personnel.
