Springdale airport gets land deal OK

July 12, 2007

The Springdale City Council on Tuesday authorized the condemnation of 6.6 acres west of Springdale Municipal Airport.

The condemnation will give the city the room it needs to expand the airport's 5,302-foot runway and taxiway by as much as 300 feet and possibly build new hangars.

The city will offer $428,000 for the property, owned by Sequoia Engineering and Manufacturing. The city first offered to buy the land in October.

The Springdale Airport Commission told City Finance Manager Wyman Morgan to try and buy only a portion of the 6.6 acres for less money.

Garver Engineers of Fayetteville, however, told Morgan and the commissioners that due to height restrictions around airports, it made sense to buy the entire parcel and level the trees there.
