Airport to get federal grant: Runway to be extended 600 feet

July 23, 2007

Jul. 20--Akron-Canton Airport is getting nearly $5.4 million in federal grant money to extend the airport's primary runway.

The U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded $5,398,223 to the airport for the project, U.S. Sen. George Voinovich announced.

The grant will help pay to extend the airport's primary runway from 7,600 feet to 8,200 feet, airport spokeswoman Kristie Van Auken said. The project, expected to take three to five years, will allow the runway to meet certain standards that will allow aircraft taking off there to fly anywhere in the United States, she said.

Work has already started, including moving vast quantities of dirt to make sure the ground under the runway extension is smooth and compacted, Van Auken said.
