United adding furloughed mechanics

Aug. 21, 2007

United Airlines plans to bring back about a dozen furloughed mechanics in Denver, the first time it has done so in more than a year.

More than 40 United mechanics in Denver remain on furlough, "so this will chisel away at that number," said Bill Moons, president of the Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association Local 8, which represents United mechanics here.

United's mechanics, on average, earn more than $60,000 a year.

The carrier cut tens of thousands of jobs after the 2001 terrorist attacks but has recently been recalling workers and hiring from outside the company. The carrier has brought on 90 customer service and ramp workers in Denver this year and is hiring 100 pilots companywide.
