Siemens announced that it was awarded a $61.9 million contract from Swinerton Builders of Los Angeles.

The contract is for the construction of a 100 percent inline baggage screening system in three north terminals at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) as a part of the LAX North Project. Overall project completion is scheduled for 2010.

The LAX North Project is a $192 million project that involves public area refurbishment in Terminals 1, 2, and 3, and the construction of a 100 percent Inline baggage screening system by Siemens Airport Logistics for automatic explosives screening of all outbound checked passenger baggage in the three terminals. The systems transport bags from the lobby ticket counters via conveyors, automatically screens them for explosives, and then sorts them by flight number for specific destinations. The specific scope for Terminals 1 and 2 includes a new, free standing, 21,000 square foot structure between the terminals to house two Explosive Detection Systems (EDS) matrices (12 CTX 9000s) and Baggage Inspection Rooms (BIRs).

A new system will be installed in Terminal 1 to sort screened bags, while a hybrid new/reworked sortation system, including extensive reconfiguration of the existing conveyor segments, will be installed in Terminal 2. Both terminals have conveyor segments that run outside of the existing terminal structures to deliver bags to the new EDS screening building, and then return them to the respective sortation systems.

A new baggage handling system (BHS) will be installed in 35,000 square feet of renovated space in the existing Terminal 3 building. The BHS system will include one EDS matrix (5 CTX9000s), two BIRs, and modifications to the existing BHS Maintenance Diagnostic System (MDS) and Management Information Systems (MIS). Temporary baggage devices will be installed in the interim to maintain airline operations.

In January 2007, Siemens announced that it had been awarded a $50.8 million contract for a 100 percent Inline Baggage Screening System at LAX's Tom Bradley International Terminal (TBIT). With these two awards, Siemens will be providing new Inline Baggage Screening Systems at four of LAX's nine terminals.

LAX is the third busiest airport in the U.S. serving more than 61 million passengers in 2006.
