BRIEF: US Airways wins China flights

Sept. 27, 2007

Sep. 25--US Airways has won federal government approval for flights to China starting in 2009.

The U.S. Department of Transportation on Tuesday tentatively awarded the carrier a daily flight from Philadelphia to Beijing, with service to start as early as March 25, 2009. Based in Arizona, US Airways has its largest hub in Charlotte.

In the same announcement, transportation officials approved Delta Airlines' request for an Atlanta-Shanghai route, starting immediately, and United Airlines' request for a San Francisco-Guangzhou route, which could start in March.

The right to fly from the U.S. to China is tightly regulated by a treaty between the countries. US Airways initially expressed interest in starting China service this year or in 2008, but early this summer decided to pursue routes starting in 2009.
