Vendors plan to expand at D/FW Airport

Oct. 27--Several airport concessionaires are looking to expand or renovate at Dallas/Fort Worth Airport, including a spa operator, a coffee chain and an electronics store.

The businesses will seek airport board approval when it meets Thursday.

XpresSpa wants to open a second day spa at D/FW's Terminal D. The New York-based chain of 12 airport spas, which offers massages, manicures, pedicures, facials and waxes, opened its first D/FW location next to Gate A24 in June. The opening weekend was the chain's best ever in terms of sales volume. That location is expected to log sales of about $1.2 million for its first year, according to airport board documents released Friday.

The proposed second location at the south end of Terminal D near Brookstone is projected to rack up $1.5 million in sales for its first year.Starbucks hopes to continue its growth at the airport with a planned remodeling of its store near Gate A33. And five gates down, at A38, a Los Amigos restaurant is supposed to be turned into another Starbucks.

The Seattle-based java giant now has 14 locations in D/FW Airport's five terminals.

And a technology store called Techshowcase is being proposed. The new store is owned by the Wellington, Fla.-based chain Airport Wireless, which recently opened two stores at D/FW. Techshowcase is aimed mostly at affluent business travelers who wouldn't otherwise have time to test high-end electronics.

But with airport delays growing, "we're getting them at a time when they're open to learning about new things," said Ilene Berman, who is co-chief executive of the chain along with her mom, Iris Goldschmidt.

Travelers can try out new products being rolled out for the first time, and Berman said the stores would bring in new gadgets at least every six months. Items will include satellite radios, PDAs and smart phones.

Techshowcase will open its first store at Oakland Airport in about two weeks and plans an additional 25 shortly thereafter. The D/FW Airport location near Gate C12 would open in February.
