Aug. 04--Hawker Beechcraft reported lower sales in the second quarter, as it delivered fewer aircraft from depressed demand in the general aviation market.
The company recorded an operating loss of $20.7 million in the quarter, compared with operating income of $39.4 million a year ago.
It delivered 54 business and general aviation aircraft, down from 78 a year ago. Last year, Hawker Beechcraft delivered a significant number of King Air aircraft under the government's Project Liberty program. Deliveries for that program concluded in late 2009.
Partially offsetting the delivery decline in the quarter was continued higher volume of T-6 trainer aircraft, it said.
Hawker Beechcraft's backlog, meanwhile, was $2.4 billion on June 27, compared with $3.1 billion at the end of the first quarter.
The most recent backlog reflects the impact of an order cancellation notice from fractional ownership provider NetJets, which reduced backlog by about $400 million.
