Police: One of the largest drug busts in department history

LAS VEGAS --

Las Vegas Metro police said more than $1 million worth of heroin seized at McCarran International Airport represented one of the largest drug busts in the department’s history.

The drugs were discovered in two suitcases scheduled to be put on a flight Saturday. Police did not name the airline involved, but said the flight was to stop in Chicago before moving on to Indiana.

Police said the suitcases contained 12.62 pounds of black tar heroin, with a street value exceeding $1 million.

A Phoenix resident, 47-year-old Jessie Gallegos, and a Mexican native, 31-year-old Jose Villarreal-Gazaviz, were arrested at the airport and face federal charges of distributing heroin and conspiracy.
