Navy To Mark 100 Years Of Aviation With Flyover

Jan. 12, 2011

SAN DIEGO --

The skies above San Diego Bay will be filled with aircraft next month as the Navy celebrates 100 years of flight.

"This will be unlike anything San Diego has ever seen," said Rear Admiral Pat McGrath. McGrath is helping coordinate a flyover of more than 150 different aircraft to honor naval aviation, which began at Naval Air Station North Island in February of 1911.

McGrath added, "Nationally there's over 32 major events that are going to happen throughout the year but it is ironic and it is appropriate that the birthplace of naval aviation is also the kickoff of that celebration."

In addition to the historic flyover, which will also include the Blue Angels, North Island will also be holding an open house for the public. At the open house, historic and modern aircraft will be on display. Tours of a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier and an amphibious assault ship will also be available.

"This is really an opportunity not only to educate the public but to educate our own and to honor those who came before us and built naval aviation," said Capt. Gary Mayes, who is the incoming Executive Officer for the base.

The event, which is free to the public, will be held at North Island in Coronado on Feb. 12 beginning at 8 a.m.
