Aviation Festival begins today

April 14--AMERICUS -- The Lindbergh Boogie Aviation Festival kicks off today as Americus and Sumter County proudly stake their claim as the home of Charles Lindbergh's first solo flight. A full schedule of events is set for the weekend with tandem skydiving being offered through Sunday.

At 7 a.m. Saturday, registration opens for two road races on the campus of South Georgia Technical College. The "Lucky Lindy" one mile fun run will begin at 8 a.m. and the "Flying Feet" 5K race will begin at 8:20 a.m. Registration will be held in front of the Aerospace Technology Center.

At 9 a.m., activities begin at the Jimmy Carter Regional Airport. The day's events will include airplane and helicopter rides as well as children's entertainment, including a jumping castle, a giant slide, dunking booth, face painting and a paper plane contest. Throughout the day several food vendors will be selling food and refreshments.

From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. free medical screenings will be offered, including blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, bone density and body fat percentage tests. At 11 a.m. a radio controlled aircraft demonstration will also take place at Hodges Hobbies, site of the Southeast Electric Flight Festival.

The cost for tandem skydiving is $195. Plane rides are $35.
