Gwinnett Commission Votes To Study Airport Expansion

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. --

The Gwinnett County commission voted on Tuesday to form a committee to study the future of Briscoe Field in Lawrenceville.

The commission was expected to vote on a plan that would kill any efforts that might allow commercial jets to land at the airport.

However, Commissioner Mike Beaudreau made a motion to form a study committee made up of residents, local businesses, aviation experts and others.

"Folks, we are in a depression practically in this economy," said Beaudreau. "It's our responsibility, when we swore an oath of office, to look at alternatives. To keep an open mind."

Beaudreau and supporters of expanding commercial flights at the airport say it will bring much-needed jobs and money to the economy.

Opponents argue expansion will create health and noise problems.

“I’ve seen nothing that gives me assurance of the magnitude of economic development that might come as a result of this," said Commission Chairman Charlotte Nash. "I am opposed to commercialization at Briscoe Field."

Those on both sides were at Tuesday's commission meeting.

"Yeah, it's going to bring some jobs," said opponent Phil Rodriguez. "What they don't say is those jobs are going to be for two men and a truck, trying to get the people out of here."

Fly Gwinnett Forward, a pro-expansion group, said it is pleased the county plans to study all options for the airport.

"I believe the environmental impact will be very low," said Jimmy Norton, a member of the group. "It could be a boon for our county."

Commissioners in favor of studying Briscoe's expansion said it will answer questions once and for all.

"I think it's time for us to look at it to see if this is a good or a bad thing," said Commissioner Lynnette Howard. “If it’s not a good thing, it will be put to rest forever.”
