July 15--The Federal Aviation Administration will host a conference next week for small-business owners interested in doing business with the FAA in connection with the work being done to develop the NextGen Air Traffic Control System.

The conference is scheduled for Monday through Thursday at the Trump Taj Mahal Conference Center in Atlantic City.

Key sessions at the conference include a discussion Wednesday with Vicki Cox, FAA director of NextGen operations and planning. Cox will speak about the challenges of implementing NextGen, a host of initiatives designed to transform the air traffic control system from a radar-based system to a satellite-based one.

Under NextGen, satellite-based technology will allow pilots to use a global positioning system to fly directly to their destination. Pilots currently fly routes dictated by the range of the ground radar stations. The William J. Hughes Technical Center in Egg Harbor Township is where much of the NextGen research is being done.

Also Wednesday, executives from seven key NextGen contractors, including ITT, Boeing and General Dynamics, will host a session to discuss opportunities to work with their companies.

The FAA has obligated $3.8 billion in contracts during fiscal year 2010. About 30 percent of that amount has gone to small businesses.
