Baggage handlers at Liverpool John Lennon Airport have voted to strike in protest over 'compulsory redundancies'

Baggage handlers at Liverpool John Lennon Airport have voted to strike in protest over compulsory redundancies.

The GMB union unveiled plans for a discontinuous strike beginning on November 23. It would mean Servisair staff walking out for two hours each morning and afternoon next Wednesday and the following Friday, Sunday and Monday. Union leaders warned delays, cancellations or rescheduling would become a possibility or flights could leave without luggage.

Servisair will try to draft in workers from other airports.

The dispute by 101 staff would affect the airlines Servisair deals with - Ryanair, Easyjet, KLM, FlyBe and Hungarian-based WizzAir.

GMB claim up to a third of the workforce could lose their jobs.

The union accused Runcorn-based Servisair of a "blatant profit-making exercise".

The union argues they are already understaffed and have assured management they can handle any extra workload, but only with the existing employees.

Regional organiser Eddie Parker said: "We reject any compulsory loses. If there do need to be redundancies, they should be voluntary.

"We've had a number of meetings and requested the company give us financial information for the Liverpool John Lennon Airport site.

A spokesman for Servisair said: "We are in continual discussions with the unions over many different points.

"On the issue of potential strike action, we have had no notification of any ballot or other communication on this."

Robin Tudor, JLA spokesman said: "Talks have taken place and Servisair have reassured us that contingency plans are in place."
