Project Ulysses aims to convert agricultural byproducts sourced from sustainable origins into an 102 million liters of SAF and 11 million liters of renewable diesel annually.

Jet Zero Australia Pty Ltd and LanzaJet Inc. announce the commencement of engineering activities in Project Ulysses. This groundbreaking project is the most advanced sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) development project in the Australasian region, using the LanzaJet Alcohol-to-Jet (ATJ) technology.

Under a recently executed engineering agreement, LanzaJet and their engineering sub- contractor, Technip Energies (T.En), are providing Jet Zero Australia with engineering design services and technical services relating to early design definition engineering of the Project Ulysses ATJ unit. The engineering work, undertaken at LanzaJet offices near Chicago, Illinois; T.En offices in Milton Keynes, UK; and Jet Zero Australia’s offices in Brisbane, Australia, includes engineering design documentation for the ethanol dehydration, oligomerization, hydrogenation, fractionation sections, and associated equipment.

A Feb. 21 Jet Zero Australia news release said, "We are also pleased to announce the receipt of competitive tenders from major engineering and construction contractors for Front End Engineering and Design (FEED) execution and Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) activities."

Jet Zero Australia is targeting completion of early design definition engineering and anticipating the award of the FEED contracts by mid-2024, positioning itself for the next phase of this transformative project.

Located in Australia’s North Queensland region, Project Ulysses aims to convert agricultural byproducts sourced from sustainable origins into an impressive 102 million liters of SAF and 11 million liters of renewable diesel annually.

The SAF produced at the facility has the potential to reduce CO2 emissions by more than 70% over the emissions life cycle compared to traditional fossil-based jet fuel.

Project Ulysses has received crucial support through investments from Airbus, Qantas, and grant support from the Queensland Government.

Jet Zero Australia CEO Ed Mason said, “Jet Zero is pleased to have commenced engineering works with our project partners and skilled Queensland-based team. This represents a major milestone in realising our plan to develop Australasia’s first LanzaJet ATJ biorefinery producing SAF and renewable diesel. The detailed engineering works will be leveraging the experience of our technology partner, LanzaJet, and our engineering contractors. The commencement of engineering activities marks a significant step toward achieving Jet Zero’s vision of a sustainable and innovative future in aviation.”

LanzaJet CEO Jimmy Samartzis commented, “At LanzaJet, we believe in building industry, protecting our climate, and enabling energy and national security – and our work in Australia delivers that ambition. Doing leading edge work requires partnership, and we’re proud to join Jet Zero Australia, the Queensland Government, Airbus, and Qantas to position Australia as a leader in the region on Sustainable Aviation Fuels with direct impact in significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions, enabling job creation, and preserving the environment for generations to come."
