Berlin, 20 May 2014: Bauhaus Luftfahrt this year once more demonstrates a strong presence at the international Berlin Air Show (ILA), opening today. In line with various appearances of its industry and project partners, the interdisciplinary research institution presents a broad spectrum of exhibits and scientific topics highlighting interesting perspectives for the long-term future of aviation. A special focus of this year’s ILA appearance is placed on “Propulsion” and “Alternative Fuels”.
Together with MTU Aero Engines (hall 2, booth no. 2301), Bauhaus Luftfahrt exhibits the concept study for a so-called “Propulsive Fuselage”. Research in this field aims at the intelligent integration of a third engine into the airframe facilitating a significant drag reduction by effectively ingesting the so-called “Boundary Layer” of the fuselage. A scale model of this novel propulsion system provides detailed insight into the technology which, despite the additional engine, would lead to fuel savings of up to ten percent.
The EU-funded research project SOLAR-JET coordinated by Bauhaus Luftfahrt exhibits a solar-reactor, which was recently used in the first successful demonstration of jet fuel production from concentrated sunlight, water and carbon-dioxide. In addition to the exhibit of the solar-reactor, researchers of Bauhaus Luftfahrt will be available at the booth of the German Aerospace Center (DLR, hall 4, booth no. 4301) to provide further information regarding this promising fuel production option.
The focus on “Alternative Fuels” is moreover fostered by Bauhaus Luftfahrt with a poster presentation of its activities in the field of “Bioenergy Potential Analysis” at the booth of the German Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI, hall 3, booth no. 3458) and with several expert lectures in the presentation area of the “Alternative Aviation Fuels-Pavillion” (hall 2, booth no. 2329).
