Birmingham, AL: Seeking to introduce more children to the world of aviation, the Southern Museum of Flight has expanded their already impressive list of educational programs. Since its creation in the mid-1960s, the SMOF’s goal has been to educate the public, especially young people, about the past, present and future of flight. The new programs offered are designed to fit into educators already existing lesson plans and cover a wide variety of subjects such as Social Studies, Science, Math and Language Arts as related to flight.
Educator, Melissa Morgan, has this to say about the new programming offered by SMOF:
I really love the new programs, they allow educators, and homeschoolers, the ability to easily incorporate the history and future of aviation into their lesson plans. Inspiring new generations is important to us at SMOF. That’s why we are committed to offering a variety of hands-on tours, activities and advanced classes designed to inspire and educate young people.
A few programs that the staff at SMOF are especially excited to offer include:
● The Flight Lab Simulator that allow young people the opportunity to learn to fly in the onsite Flight Simulators
● Aviation Adventure Camps held throughout the year that allow children age 4-14 to discover the history, science and technology of aviation
● Guided Tours focused on the history, science and math of aviation
● Hands-On Activities focused on helping students learn the principles of aerodynamics, weather, 3-D Design and aviation history
