In 2001, after two years of research and development from the basement of his suburban Atlanta home, David Gray launched the company’s first product: the Flight Display Moving Map. This product provided passengers with a live map of their flight, plus pertinent flight data such as altitude, speed, and distance to destination. Compared to other products, the Flight Display Moving Map was less expensive, faster, and easier to install.

Based on the immediate success of the Flight Display Moving Map, David expanded the company’s offerings to include LCD monitors and audio/video sources, such as aircraft DVD players, CD/MP3 players, and Flight View cameras.

Eleven years later, Flight Display Systems manufactures over 120 unique in-flight entertainment products targeted at the retrofit and refurbishment market. In addition to the Moving Map, the company boasts a broad line of high-definition LCD monitors from 5- to 52-inches in size, Blu-ray and DVD players, and a line of iPod/iPad/iPhone accessories. The Select Cabin Management System is specifically tailored for VIP aircraft from 4 to 35 passengers. Flight Display Systems also manufactures ruggedized LCD monitors used in military surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft. This includes NVG compliant and touch-screen monitors.

Flight Display Systems' 20-inch low profile LCD monitor fits both Gulfstream and Challenger aircraft. The FD201CV-LP accepts three video inputs, including Composite, S-Video, and Analog RGB (also referred to as VGA). The company recently received PMA approval from the FAA and from the original STC holder. Flight Display Systems now has PMA approval on LCD monitors of 7, 10.2, 15, and 20 inches in size. Flight Display Systems today introduced the most innovative solution for adding cockpit panel space where none exists. Called "The Flipper", the thin, small 5-inch LCD display installs easily on most existing glareshields and flips into position when needed. "Now you see it, now you don™t," said David Gray, founder of Flight Display Systems. "When The Flipper is stowed, it becomes virtually indiscernible and does not disrupt the flow and panel scan of aircraft crew." "The Flipper from Flight Display Systems is an ingenious retrofit product," said Mark Huffstutler, President of Sierra Industries. "It solves the panel display space problems that we face with the Citation and provides a low cost yet effective solution for the customer." With the advent of new sources of streaming data flowing into the cockpit, aircraft owners and operators are challenged to find efficient ways to display this information. Completion and refurbishment companies are often hard pressed to find panel room for data like Enhanced Vision Systems (EVS), satellite weather information, flight cameras, and Moving Maps. With The Flipper, they now have a low cost, easy to install solution that does not require additional space or a rework of the entire instrument panel. The Flipper is a lightweight unit that mounts easily on existing instrument panels with a unique low-profile attachment bracket. When not in use, the display flips to a horizontal stowed position using only a half-inch of visual panel space. The flight crew has access to a relatively large 5-inch display once The Flipper is deployed. Sierra Industries has started a Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) for The Flipper installation and a Flight Display Systems patent is pending. For certification purposes, The Flipper is considered an Advisory Information Display.
