Online Reader Poll
- Thursday June 10, 2010In early April we posted a question on the AMT Online Reader Poll regarding certification for aircraft maintenance technicians and advanced certification provided by industry organizations. There were three short answers to choose from. After two months well over 300 people responded. The question restated was, Is a more specialized system for advanced certification/ratings beyond the FAA A&P/IA certificates needed? Here is a breakdown of the responses: 177 votes (54%) answered the current system for maintenance technician certification is adequate. 88 votes (27%) answered that FAA certification should include advanced or specialized certification/ratings. 57 votes (17%) answered that industry associations should provide advanced or... -
Thanks to a Few "Aviation Vets"
- Thursday June 3, 2010Last weekend there was a gathering at Stanton Airfield, the local airport where I hang out, to celebrate a local man’s life long involvement in aviation. Clarence Hines, 86, spent three years in the military from 1942 to 1945, serving the U.S. Army during World War II as a machine gunner. While serving, he earned a purple heart and a bronze star. But that’s not really the reason that I mention him in this blog. Clarence had been an A&P, IA, CFI, charter pilot, airport manager, and all around aviation jack-of-all trades for 46 years at this small country airport. In April of this year he was one of seven people to be inducted into the Minnesota Aviation Hall of Fame. I first met Clarence about 20 years ago. Last week while... -
AMT Day, RAA, and More
- Thursday May 20, 2010Next week Monday May 24, Charles Taylor’s birthday, is now known as Aviation Maintenance Technician – AMT Day. Charles Edward Taylor began his aviation career working as a machinist for Orville and Wilbur Wright at the Wright Cycle Company in Dayton, Ohio. He earned a place in aviation history along with the Wright brothers and eventually became known as "The Father of Aircraft Maintenanceâ€. Over the past few years there have been picnics and celebrations at aircraft maintenance facilities, airlines, schools, FBOs, corporate aircraft maintenance departments and more, to commemorate the Father of Aircraft Maintenance and the Aircraft Maintenance Technician. I know of a few local celebrations in my area and plan to attend at... -
Another Mega Merger
- Thursday May 6, 2010Fresh on the heels of the Delta and Northwest Airlines merger, this week we heard the announcement that United and Continental airlines will be the next to combine into one huge airline. This should be no real surprise for people following the airline industry. For years now we have heard the speculation both in this country and abroad of further consolidation primarily of the legacy air carriers. Some of the industry analysts have said that eventually only a handful of major airlines will exist. The Justice Department must eventually approve the combination and we will see and hear much more news on this subject over the next one to two years. Having recently worked in the airline segment I recall some of the rational... -
Reconnecting
- Thursday April 29, 2010Last week I mentioned that I was on my way to MRO Americas 2010 - an event that attracted maintenance and repair organizations from around the world. I felt it was a great show – the first MRO Americas event that I attended. The event included numerous sessions regarding current events and issues in the heavy aircraft maintenance industry. Representatives from small services organizations, to parts, equipment, and tooling companies, to both small and large scale airframe, engine, and component repair and overhaul facilities were all there. Several airlines which perform third party maintenance were also represented. I have not yet seen any specific attendance numbers for the event – one report I read stated that it... -
Air Travel Disruption
- Thursday April 22, 2010As I wing my way from Minneapolis to Phoenix to attend the MRO Americas 2010, I wonder what the impact of the recent Iceland volcano will have on the attendance. This aviation industry trade show attracts airline and aviation maintenance exhibitors and industry professionals from all over the world. Early indications are that many Europeans who planned to attend may not be able to because of the airline travel disruption situation. We’ve all seen and read the news over the last week regarding the travel disruptions throughout Europe and how they have impacted the world. I spent many years working in the airline industry, and looking back it seems like every few years (especially over the last 10 years or more) some... -
NBAA MMC
- Thursday April 15, 2010Last week Jon Jezo AMT Publisher, Nick Sergi AMT Director of Content, Tom Hendershot AMTSociety Executive Director, and I attended the National Business Aircraft Association's 25th Annual Maintenance Management Conference. Earlier this week the NBAA reported that 350 people and 83 exhibitors participated in the conference, both of which were increases over last year's event. Additionally, the number of recipients for the Maintenance Committee's Technical Reward and Career Scholarship (TRAC) program grew from 22 last year to 30 in 2010. A news release from NBAA was posted on the AMT website earlier this week, or you can visit the NBAA website for further information. This was my first NBAA event and a well organized event it was. A... -
The AMT Online Reader Polls
- Thursday April 8, 2010As part of the media industry AMT likes to know what our readers think and feel about certain topics. There are a number of ways this is typically done; feedback from readers, letters to the editors, participation in the AMT Online Forums, replies to this Blog, and more. All are important and provide the magazine a sense of what our readers want and how they feel, in order to provide you with the information important to your jobs. A number of months ago AMT placed its first reader poll on the AMT Online homepage – you may recall seeing it. AIE in Review
- Wednesday March 24, 2010The AMT staff is back from the 2010 Aviation Industry Expo (AIE) and what an event this was. For me it was the first time I attended the AIE. A few photos of the event have been posted on the AIE website home page with more coverage soon - so stay tuned. The week began with the Golf Outing and AMTSociety Scholarship Fundraiser on Monday March 15th. There were 105 participants in this event, the weather was great, and most of all a huge thank you goes to Harrah's Entertainment and Peter Zeeb of Harrah's aviation department and AMTSociety board member, for all the support and hard work in coordinating this event. AMTSociety held a host of maintenance training/IA renewal sessions of which 107 aviation maintenance professionals... -
The Aviation Industry Expo and AMTSociety
- Thursday March 11, 2010Next week is the 2010 Aviation Industry Expo in Las Vegas Nevada. This year promises to be a great show. Over 250 exhibitors are scheduled to display their aviation related products and services. The important benefit of the AIE is the fact this is the only annual aviation event that is focused on different yet equally important and linked aspects of aviation; be it Ground Support, FBO/Aviation Services, Fueling, and Aircraft Maintenance. On the FBO and aviation services side, The National Air Transportation Association (NATA) will host the annual Spring Training Week in conjunction with the Aviation Industry Expo. A large variety of training sessions and general informational seminars will take place targeted at aviation services...
