AviationPros.com
The all new Cygnus Aviation portal www.AviationPros.com went live this week. As a reminder, if you visit the original AMTOnline.com you will be automatically redirected to the new site. Whether we embrace the “digital age” or not, most people’s lives have become immersed in the use of the Internet. Internet functionality has evolved to the point that aircraft maintenance professionals, technicians and executives alike, can access a wide variety of information ranging from OEM troubleshooting guidance, to status of orders from parts and material distributors, industry news, and technical articles – all via the Internet. In an effort to provide an experience all aviation users will value we have initiated a strategy that... -
Business Aviation Gathers
Next week the business aviation community will gather in Las Vegas, Nevada, for the NBAA2011 64th Annual Meeting & Convention. The Las Vegas Convention Center will be bustling with aviation people and products, along with business, educational and aircraft operational sessions. Henderson Executive Airport located on the south side of Las Vegas will be home for numerous aircraft on static display throughout the event. Anyone with an interest in aviation is welcome; you don’t need to be part of a large corporate flight department, or operate turbo-props and jets. Visiting with an old friend recently I was reminded of a small rural manufacturing firm that purchased a new Cessna 172 in the mid-1970s. This airplane... -
Where Were You?
- Thursday September 8, 2011The date 9/11 and the events of that tragic day in 2001 has remained on the minds of most Americans. Do you remember where you were that September morning 10 years ago? I was working in the Quality Assurance group at Northwest Airlines and several of us were invited to an FAA meeting that day. We arrived at a local hotel near MSP and I recall as we entered the lobby an unusually large group of people huddled around the television, quietly watching the tragic events unfold. Needless to say the meeting began a little late and didn’t last long. The early realities of what had just happened followed by the anticipation of what was yet to come rapidly impacted everyone. Soon the meeting was disbanded with people returning (or... -
Floating Over the Countryside
- Thursday August 25, 2011Being an enthusiast for all things aviation I’ve had the chance to fly in some interesting machines; not near as many as I would like with still more on my bucket list. I have piloted or flown in the usual array of GA aircraft, a few helicopters, several antiques, experimental, LSAs, gliders, ultra lights, and of course been passenger in many different airliners. Some of the most memorable flights were in a late 1920s OX5 powered Waco 10, and being able to spend time in the cockpit of a Boeing 777 over the South China Sea (pre-9/11 of course). Now I can add to this list floating over the Wisconsin countryside in a Zeppelin. Last month toward the end of EAA AirVenture I was delighted when my long-time aviation friend and his wife... -
Actively Engaged Defined
- Thursday August 11, 2011The much anticipated clarification by the FAA regarding the definition of “actively engaged†for the purposes of Inspection Authorization (IA) renewal was published last week in the August 4, 2011 Federal Register/Volume 76, No. 150. The FAA restates in the notice the term “actively engaged†has in the past caused confusion among both industry and the FAA Aviation Safety Inspectors who are tasked with renewing an individual technician’s IA. The notice restates and emphasizes the regulatory requirements for holding the IA, and states, “the FAA has adopted a broad definition of ‘‘actively engaged’’ to include not only part-time employment but also occasional activity, which does... -
Aviation Green
- Thursday July 28, 2011The beginning days of the EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh Wisconsin were filled with the usual sunshine, hot temperatures, and airplanes old and new. But the first session I attended was nothing like the traditional sessions I generally attend. This one was all about innovation and the environment. On Monday I attended an informational session held at the EAA Aviation Center called Aviation Green, a Lindberg Foundation Alliance. John Petersen president and founder of The Arlington Institute opened the session with a few comments about Aviation Green by saying, “We operate at the intersection of technology and the environment in the aviation segment.†The mission of Aviation Green is to bring together stakeholders to address... -
AMTSociety Update
- Thursday July 14, 2011Tom Hendershot AMTSociety executive director recently provided this membership update on their website. Since AMT Magazine works hand-in-hand with AMTSociety I felt posting this letter provides non-AMTSociety readers the ability to also understand more of the organizations endeavors. Enjoy, Ron AMTSociety: Our Mission and Achievements AMTSociety has been in existence now for a bit over four and a half years and I was recently queried about why it was formed. It is a result of a group of visionaries, all sharing interests in aviation maintenance that came to the realization our profession was in need of some preventative maintenance. Thus, the creation of an organization, in spite of the rationalization, we are traditionally non-joiners... -
Aviation Groups Respond
- Thursday June 30, 2011Last night as I went through my email it was clear from the number of press releases in my inbox that President Obama had created a stir among the general and business aviation segments of our industry. In a press conference yesterday the President made comments related to a tax incentive known as accelerated depreciation which allows a company to take larger tax deductions early in aircraft ownership, which makes it more cost effective for companies to purchase new aircraft. It’s reported the president mentioned owners of corporate jets numerous times as an example of a group that should be paying more in taxes by changing the accelerated depreciation criteria. The accelerated depreciation program has been touted by the industry as... -
The Topic was Unmanned Aircraft
- Thursday June 16, 2011Hundreds of people were in attendance recently as the Red River Valley Research Corridor hosted the 5th Annual Unmanned Aircraft Systems Summit in Grand Forks, ND. High ranking military officials, politicians, FAA, educators, and numerous companies and organizations involved in UAS provided updates and insights relating to the UAS industry. A very positive message was given regarding UAS as an emerging industry in the civilian and commercial segments of aviation. United States Senator John Hoeven from North Dakota during opening remarks stated, “If we (the USA) don’t rapidly develop UAS and open the national airspace system to UAS operations, someone else will.†Michael Tosccano, executive director of the Association for... -
EBACE Review
- Thursday June 2, 2011Last month while attending the European Business Aviation Convention & Exhibition (EBACE 2011), you couldn’t help but notice an upbeat feeling among exhibitors and attendees alike. As reported on May 23rd on AMTOnline attendance figures were up to nearly 12,751, from 108 countries, with over 500 exhibitors, and 62 aircraft on static display. EBACE was truly a global event and the first time I have attended. An impressive panel of speakers from around the world was assembled for the opening ceremony with the theme, “Linking Communities and Economies.” Many of the discussions and comments heard from emerging areas of the world were very consistent, regardless if they came from representatives from the Middle East, Russia, South...
