During the Thursday evening Networking Reception Cygnus unveiled plans for next year’s new and improved show, AviationProsLIVE. AMT IA Renewal Exam
For many years AMT Magazine has provided an annual AMT Recurrent Training Exam with questions based on AMT's past year's print and the Online Exclusive articles. You can search through your own copies, read the individual articles online, and as you know this exam is good for four hours toward your IA renewal and six hours credit for the FAA AMT Awards program with a passing score of 85% correct answers. Late last year all of the Cygnus Aviation properties, including AMT , combined together into the very interactive portal known as AviationPros.com. During the roll-over from the old amtonline.com website to the new AviationPros.com portal it appears several of last year’s Online Exclusive articles inadvertently did not roll-over... -
FAA Reauthorization - Finally
- Wednesday February 1, 2012On Tuesday the House and Senate approved a four-year reauthorization for funding putting an end to the series of 23 short-term extensions since 2007. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison, R-Texas was quoted as saying, "Now we're going to have four years of stability in this industry. It's a huge accomplishment." Accomplishment I agree with but stability? Perhaps the FAA will find some stability , but with recent news of more airline bankruptcies and potentially more mega-size airline mergers, the words s tability and airline industry just don’t seem to go together right now. Perhaps stability will come in other ways, and yes the FAA and industry should feel a sense of relief, and the FAA should be able to conduct appropriate business... -
U.S. Sport Aviation Expo Officially Opens Today
- Thursday January 19, 2012Today through Sunday January 22 the sport aviation community once again gathers in Sebring, FL, to experience the Light Sport Aircraft (LSA) industry’s latest developments; the 8 th year for this annual event. Last year it’s reported 180 exhibitors from the U.S. and abroad along with 14,000 attendees made the trip to Sebring. According to http://www.bydanjohnson.com/Sidebar.cfm?Article_ID=1534#607 there have been some 2,200 Special Light Sport Aircraft (SLSA) registrations in the United States. An impressive statistic since this industry really took hold with the FAA ruling in 2004. This number does not include the Experimental Light Sport Aircraft (ELSA), powered parachutes, and weight shift types of recreational aircraft... -
2012 Brings Announcement of More Job Loss in the "Air Capital of the World."
This week the Boeing Company announced that by the end of 2013 the Boeing Defense, Space & Security (BDS) facility in Wichita would be closed, eliminating more aerospace jobs in the city. Reports are some of the engineering and project management work will be shifted to Oklahoma City, maintenance and modification work to San Antonio, TX, and other work to the state of Washington saving a portion of these jobs assuming employees choose to relocate. Defense budget reductions and shifting customer priorities were mentioned as reasons behind the decision. This facility maintains significance in Wichita aviation history. Parts of it reportedly belonged to the Stearman Aircraft Company in the 1920s, during World War II Boeing built such... -
FAA Imposes New Pilot Duty Time Rule
The Federal Aviation Administration this week released new rules aimed at preventing airline pilots from flying while fatigued. Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood said, “This is a major safety achievement. We made a promise to the traveling public that we would do everything possible to make sure pilots are rested when they get in the cockpit. This new rule raises the safety bar to prevent fatigue.” But wait, what about aircraft mechanic duty time? We get fatigued just as pilots do. Industry along with the FAA has for years admitted mechanic fatigue is a known contributor factor to human errors in aircraft maintenance, and the FAA Safety Team (FAASTeam) offers an online training course for mechanics titled, “Fatigue... -
International Civil Aviation Day
This week‘s industry news contained many reports and commentaries relating to airline bancrupcy filings and the resignation of the FAA Administrator. News, yes, but both unfortunate even negative events in our industry. An important date in world history, December 7th is the 70th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, drawing the United States into World War II. One small and less noticed bit of news caught my attention; a celebration of civil aviation! How many of us were aware of this one? I‘ll be honest, I‘d heard of this day in the past, knew it was approaching, yet had forgotten until reading about it this week. December 7 th is International Civil Aviation Day, an official United Nations celebration... -
AMTSociety Roadshow in Seattle
Last week I traveled to Seattle, Washington, where I attended the AMTSociety Inspection Authorization (IA) Renewal training event. Approximately 60 A&P/IA technicians were present coming from the usual array of aircraft maintenance segments including antique airplane restoration shops, helicopter operators, aircraft maintenance schools, corporate aircraft operators, and a few from the military, airlines and Boeing. A show of hands revealed most of us in attendance were well over the age of 50; few if any under the age of 40. The next day while visiting the Boeing Commercial Aviation Services maintenance training group, senior manager Steve Pennington presented the Current Market Outlook Boeing’s long-term forecast of air traffic... -
AviationPros.com
The all new Cygnus Aviation portal www.AviationPros.com went live this week. As a reminder, if you visit the original AMTOnline.com you will be automatically redirected to the new site. Whether we embrace the “digital age” or not, most people’s lives have become immersed in the use of the Internet. Internet functionality has evolved to the point that aircraft maintenance professionals, technicians and executives alike, can access a wide variety of information ranging from OEM troubleshooting guidance, to status of orders from parts and material distributors, industry news, and technical articles – all via the Internet. In an effort to provide an experience all aviation users will value we have initiated a strategy that...
