People are seriously considering the idea of building circular runways, but don’t’ take my word for it. Just Google “circular runway”. You’ll find arguments about the pros and cons of such a runway.
It’s too early for an April Fool’s joke, so there must really be some who believe it will work.
Like most pilots, I have at one time or another thought about a circular runway and pondered it in my heart. There are claimed advantages, of course, such as airplanes could always land into the wind. Then there are also disadvantages, like who’s gonna keep that traffic straight?
Also, if it is a true circle, airplanes will be landing in a slight turn. Or, do you reckon the runway would have banked walls, like a NASCAR race track? Then you’d be landing one wing low and one high. Sounds scary to me.
