This year’s Aviation Technician Education Council’s Annual Conference was held April 9-12 in Atlanta, GA. The conference provided four days of professional development sessions for Part 147 school educators, a chance to visit with exhibitors providing materials and equipment to aviation maintenance schools, and a chance to hear from numerous industry representatives about the skills needed by new A&Ps entering the workforce.

Kevin Morgan, manager of the general aviation branch in the FAA’s aircraft maintenance division, was on hand the entire time to interact with educators and to provide an update to attendees on the recent NPRM regarding Part 147. The activities and sessions available to attendees were too many to mention, and included a tour of the Delta TechOps maintenance facility and the Delta Airlines Museum.

In his closing remarks, ATEC president Ryan Goertzen told the audience that ATEC is extremely excited about what lies ahead for Part 147. He also asked attendees to speak with their industry partners and encourage them to get involved as a member of ATEC and ultimately a member of the Maintenance Training Review Board that will be the mechanism used to update Part 147 educational requirements in the future.

Part 147 schools produce if you will the next generation of technicians and our replacements. Get involved with your local A&P school, join their program advisory committee, and influence the aviation educational programs in your area.

The 2017 ATEC Conference is planned for the Seattle, WA, area in early April.
