An Update: The House Bill and Unions

It's interesting how things some times come together. My last blog explored the idea of unionization. In fact, there were many inputs to the subject and I would like to thank all those who submitted an opinion. It is apparent that there is something in the subject that is of interest to our readers and it does not take a mind reader to figure it out. Each and every response indicated in some way an overdue need for an organization to represent professional aircraft technicians. A few favored a union, while most decried the idea of a union. Aircraft technicians are known to be non-joiners. Regardless, just this week the House of Representatives passed its version of the FAA Reauthorization Bill. One of the amendments in the bill overrides the recent National Mediations Board ruling concerning union elections. Essentially this comes down to making it easier for unions to organize within those industries that are subject to the Railway Transportation Act. I have reported to you previously on this subject. The House amendment repeals that ruling, but the White House has said it will veto the final bill, (the version arrived at after House and Senate bills are married) if it includes the House amendment. I don't wish to articulate political, but if the NMB ruling is allowed to go forward it would mean that, whereas in the past, if you did not vote for the union it was counted as a "no" vote. Under the NMB ruling that changed and your vote would not be counted either way, making it possible for the union to organize with only a majority of those voting. It will be interesting to see where this goes and who prevails. If you have an opinion it would be a good time to write your congressmen. Let them know how you feel about this subject. One comment in regard to the many submitted on unionization. Connecting with others that share the passion of aircraft maintenance and having a willingness to step forward is not Quixote like. While I admire your knowledge and enthusiasm Bubba, raising the level of your profession is, hopefully, not "chasing of windmills." If each makes it a personal objective to get involved, I believe improvements will come. Despite the segmented aspects of the job, a concerted, unified effort by all will bring results.
