Great News for Me

May 18, 2010
I got great news last week—Southwest will be providing service in/out of Greenville-Spartanburg Airport (GSP), SC, in 2011. Hey Ralph, some said—why’s that big news for you? You live 123 miles away in Erwin, TN. Well, right now I fly out of Tri-Cities Airport (TRI), 40 miles away in the Bristol, TN, area, 50 miles away in Asheville, NC (AVL), or—every now and then—133 miles away in Knoxville, TN (TYS). GSP is only 83 miles farther than Asheville and is 10 miles closer than TYS. But the real reason is that GSP is only 77 miles from Asheville. I well remember that during my years in Huntsville, AL (HSV), Southwest did not fly into Huntsville but did fly into Birmingham, AL (BHM) and Nashville, TN (BNA), each about 100 miles away. To keep people from driving to BHM or BNA, airlines in HSV kept their prices low enough that I almost never had to drive to either. I am hoping that Southwest will likewise lower the fares in Asheville. Will it work out that way? I guess we’ll find out. Right now, though, I’ll sit back and wait for the verbal onslaught I’ll receive because of this Blog. We’d love to post your comments. Please click the comment tab at the top of the page.
