Amarillo Airport Baggage Inspection System to be Modified

Dec. 31, 2019

Efforts are underway to modify the existing Rick Husband Amarillo International Airport Checked Baggage lnspection System to install a system provided by the Transportation Security Administration.

The Amarillo City Council has approved an Other Transaction Agreement with the Department of Homeland Security TSA providing design and bid services, clearing the way for installation of the new Explosive Detection System.

Per the requested action summary, the OTA outlines 100 percent reimbursement not to exceed $80,556.50 to provide the identified design and bid services via architecture, engineering and consulting company RS&H. RS&H serves as the city's primary consultant for all airport projects.

According to the TSA website, EDS units are automated systems used to scan checked baggage and analyze the contents to determine whether explosive threats are present, adding the automated systems streamline the checked baggage screening process at airports nationwide.

The funding summary indicates the airport fund will be able to accommodate the cash flow until reimbursement, noting reimbursement will be submitted approximately every 30 days until the design phase is complete. The installation phase will be completed by separate contract, per the agreement.

"I fly frequently for business, so I'm interested to know they'll be making that inspection modification," Amarillo resident Austin Ryan said. "Although this is supposed to streamline the process, I don't mind even if it adds a bit more time, because at the end of the day, we all want to safely reach our destinations."
