Due to an increasing need for oil, exploitation and an effective utilization of resources are on China’s political and environmental agenda, reports Dr. Christine Grötzbach.


The acceptance procedure, standard with any TCS installation, confirmed the outstanding performance of the system in Guangzhou. Each section was individually examined. The focus of each test series is a prepared valve integrated in the pipeline system at the opening for air, for water or at the sampling point. It has a defined opening visible to the human eye only in back light, letting through a weak glimmer. The pipeline is pressurized over a defined period, and the quantity of the leaking fuel is determined. The accuracy is measured by the relation of the calculated and the determined leakage rate and referred to the section volume. The obtained data in tests without an artificially-created leakage allow a conclusion to be drawn about loose valves, air or water in the pipeline system.

The test results confirmed the decision of Bluesky management level for a control system that reliably detects hair-fine tears and minimal leakages. An excellent cooperation between the Bluesky team and the experts of hansaconsult marked the nocturnal start-up. Dr. Klaus Peters and Jürgen Grötzbach of hansaconsult appreciated the Chinese mentality and orientation toward Health-Safety-Environment (HSE) principles for excellent comprehensive measures for accident prevention and careful handling of natural resources.

Mobile Flexibility for Smaller Pipeline Systems

Baiyun represents a perfect connection of the latest technology and a consequent environment protection. However, Chinese airports with less ambitious technical automation are interested in the mobile version of TCS, which checks tightness of single sections with the same sensitivity and accuracy.

hansaconsult Launches TCS on US Market

Starting Jan. 1, hansaconsult, the leading fuel infrastructure expert in engineering and consulting, changes its US service structure to ensure and even top the service level, to reduce overhead cost and to standardize global safety activities. John D. Birnie is the key person for fuel-related safety and quality issues in US civil and military aviation. He has dedicated half of his life to all aspects of handling fuel to ensure compliance of state, federal and Air Force environmental and safety regulations. During this time he received numerous awards such as the “Unit Safety Representative of the year” in 1993, “Compliance person of the year” in 1997 and “Best Fuels Organization in ANG” by the American Petroleum Institute in 2000.

Hansaconsult is globally acknowledged for technologically superior safety solutions. The performance of the Tightness Control System (TCS) is responsible for being accepted as the leading leak detection system worldwide, with certification by the significant bodies and authorities such as Ken Wilcox Associates (US EPA) and TÜV. With the new TCS system, hansaconsult extends its lead over other market systems.

The new TCS has been successfully implemented in Guanghzou (China), Israel, Arlanda (Sweden) and Australia with an average accuracy of 0.0015 percent and an extraordinary accuracy of 0.00095 percent (in 20 percent of all tests). The average test duration at new hydrants systems has been reduced significantly to less than 45 minutes. Perfectly suitable for small hydrant systems (automated SKID solution), it can be easily integrated in all standard SCADA systems or operated independently. Due to its lean system architecture, it is operationally most cost-effective.

Establishing safe and economic fueling infrastructure according to worldwide standards is the philosophy of hansaconsult. The new US service structure and the new TCS was set to be introduced at the Armbrust Aviation Conference in Las Vegas Feb. 19-21 of this year.
