ARINC Direct has developed a system to advise operators immediately when FAA or Eurocontrol issues a notice delaying their planned departure time. ARINC Direct operators will be able to track their departure clearance times by logging onto the ARINC Direct website. Any delay information will be updated and integrated with the flight plan information already available, giving the customer a complete picture of the flight’s status. By late summer, ARINC plans to add automatic notification in which operators will receive automated alerts via their choice of e-mail, PDA, fax, or cell phone — even by datalink messages right to the aircraft — whenever delays affect their planned departure times.
ARINC has also been chosen by Air Canada to bring ARINC’s iMuse Express™, a fully connected check-in service, to its seasonal and Tier 3 airport locations. Canada’s national flag carrier is now using iMuse Express for check-ins at eight of its Tier 3 destinations, from Allentown to Maui, and at seasonal locations such as Palm Springs. The iMuse Express hardware fits into a suitcase, and consists of a laptop PC and two small printers for boarding passes and bag tags.
International Communications Group (ICG), developers and manufacturers of aeronautical communications systems and solutions for the general aviation and air transport industries, has signed an agreement with Flight Explorer to incorporate the FE Professional™ Aircraft Situational Display (ASD) flight tracking system with the ICG CIS-100 and ICS-120 satellite transceivers.
FE Professional ASD is an integrated global flight tracking and management decision support tool that provides air carriers global data feeds, third-party data integration, flight planning system integration, route building, checking and display, airport information, Flight Alert™ system, user-selectable graphical overlays, map and background image overlays, and NASA FACET predictive air traffic.
Logan International Airport has initiated a pilot program testing a new handheld scanner that can detect liquid explosives in sealed, carry-on bottled liquids. Transportation Security Administration screeners will use the Fido PaxPoint liquid threat detector from ICx Technologies for random tests at Logan’s Terminal E, the seven-lane security checkpoint.
Intertek Group plc has been named a certification agency for Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) Visual Guidance Lighting Equipment Approval Program (VGLEAP). The program includes the testing and certification of lighting and visual aid equipment, such as runway approach lighting, to applicable FAA standards for safety, performance, and quality.
As part of the testing and inspection for the VGLEAP program, Intertek will evaluate airport visual aid equipment to ensure that it has been manufactured to perform in accordance with applicable FAA specifications.
Korea’s Incheon International Airport has deployed SITA’s new self-service kiosk for passenger check-in. Airlines will participate — as part of a three-year, multi-million dollar investment — in a plan that allows passengers, who already pre-check-in on their mobile phones with Korean Air, to use the 2D bar codes sent to their phone to print out their boarding passes at any of the 38 next-generation AirportConnect CUSS (Common Use Self Service) kiosks throughout the airport. The kiosks are also equipped with passport and visa readers for instant passenger recognition.
TraceGuard Technologies has announced that the CompactSafe™ system has completed an operational pilot program at Israel’s primary airport. CompactSafe inspects complex items at passenger and baggage screening checkpoints, and works in conjunction with security equipment currently in use to improve accuracy and efficiency in detecting explosives. The system is designed to extract traces of explosives from items such as laptops, medical devices, cameras, and electronic devices.
