Publisher's Sign-Off: New Magazine Technologies

Sept. 29, 2011

Quick Response (QR) codes have started to pop up everywhere these days, grocery stores, newspapers, magazines, billboards, on aircraft placards and now in the pages of AMT magazine.

If you’re not familiar with them, they’re the square barcodes with the black pattern on a white background that you’ll see on this page and elsewhere in our magazine. You may even see some color QR codes in the near future.

Unlike standard barcodes, QR codes can store more data, including URL links, geo-coordinates, videos, coupons or text. These codes can be scanned with a smartphone to link people to additional information.

If you have a smartphone and it didn’t come with a QR scanner already installed, you can find a variety of QR scanner apps online for free. Just check the Android market, iPhone app store, or your device carriers’ market.

Instead of listing a long URL you have to type in to your computer to access information, we can include a QR code and you can easily scan it to get directly to the information. Be sure to scan the QR codes below and try out this cool new feature.
