To Quench Your Thirst

There is an old saying that comes to mind when I think about our economic times that we are having: “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.” No one knows this better than I do. Recently, as some of you may or may not know, I was in a very bad head-on car crash and broke all of the bones in my lower right leg. I have had three surgeries and spent two weeks in the hospital. I have been informed that with time I will have a full recovery, but I have gained a very different outlook on where I am going and what is really important.

Now you don’t have to break your leg to realize that we need to change how we do business and how we operate on a day-to-day schedule. There are many opportunities or “lemons to be turned into lemonade,” when it comes to the ground support industry and “going green.” Sustainability and how we can best accomplish this has been at the top of everyone’s mind. There are so many options out there: electric, bio-diesel, propane, hydrogen, etc.

Sustainability has more components than just the purchase of a fuel-efficient piece of equipment. Is this piece of equipment able to get you through two eight-hour shifts back-to-back and reduce your fuel use? Can your equipment be modified as the new emission standards change or is it already compliant? How well trained are your employees? Employee error can cost more than the piece of equipment itself if it is not maintained properly or if the wrong fuel is added. How well do you keep your maintenance records or the records of how many pieces of equipment you actually own? How do we change effectively? These are questions I am sure that have gone through everyone’s mind.

Companies are always trying to stay ahead of the curve by producing new and innovative products, which can help with all of your questions. This is the perfect lead-in to our November Industry Showcase. For 2009, more so than any other year, it is important to really look and see what is out there because so many of the products and services can help you save time, money and the environment. The Ground Support Worldwide Industry Showcase can help you make your own “lemonade.”
