Seattle-Tacoma International Airport has installed a permanent avian radar system, the first major airport in the country to do so. The radar at Sea-Tac is part of an FAA research program charged with providing data and information on bird movement dynamics.
The goal is to provide guidance to FAA so it can develop procedures that may help pilots, air traffic controllers, and wildlife managers avoid a catastrophic bird strike accident.
According to a Bird Strike Committee U.S.A. report, the initial deployment of avian radars is being supplemented with additional units at O’Hare, JFK, and Dallas-Fort Worth International Airports.

Rapiscan screening
The Rapiscan real-time tomography (RTT) system is a high-speed gantry computed tomography baggage screening system. The stationary gantry design allows RTT to achieve speed and high-resolution 3-D X-ray images that can more accurately detect potential threats, the company says.
