Lee’s Summit Airport Runway Improvements Project Wins Award

The Lee’s Summit Airport Runway Improvements project was announced as a Public Works Transportation Project of the Year by the Kansas City Metro Chapter of the American Public Works Association (APWA) at a luncheon on May 23, at the DoubleTree Hotel in Overland Park. The $18 million project won in the transportation category for projects more than $5 million but less than $25 million. The entire project team, including the City of Lee’s Summit Public Works Department, engineering design consultant Crawford Murphy & Tilly Inc., and contractor Emery Sapp & Sons, was recognized for the award.

The APWA Project of the Year awards recognize excellence in the management and administration of public works projects. Project of the Year awards are given in four divisions: projects less than $5 million; projects of $5 million, but less than $25 million; projects of $25 million to $75 million; and projects more than $75 million. There are also five categories: structures; transportation; environment; historical restoration/preservation; and disaster or emergency construction/repair.

Gainesville Regional Airport Welcomes Beamer

Gainesville Regional Airport (GNV) announced May 23, a new addition to its family: an explosives detection K-9 named Beamer.
Beamer and Berger, GNV’s Security Coordinator and K-9 Handler are certified in the detection of Homemade and Large Explosives. In addition, Beamer received her certification from the American Detection Canine Association.
Beamer was named for Todd Beamer, who led a takeover by passengers on United Airlines Flight 93, the fourth plane to go down in the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks in Shanksville, Penn.

Ken Wiegand Joins BA Group

The Business Aviation Group announced that Kenneth F. Wiegand, A.A.E., principal of Business Airport Consulting LLC, is now providing airport consulting services to BA Group clients.
Wiegand’s airport management career began in November 1985, where he enjoyed a successful 10-year term as the airport manager and executive director of the Winchester Regional Airport Authority in Winchester, Virginia. As the airport manager, he focused on the airport’s daily operations, safety, security, expansion and development as well as the operations of the airport’s publicly-owned and operated Fixed Base Operation (FBO). He received recognition in 1989 as Virginia’s Airport Manager of the Year.

Long Beach City Council Awards Swinerton Builders Design-Build Contract

The Long Beach City Council unanimously voted to award the design-build contract for Long Beach Airport’s (LGB) Phase II Terminal Area Improvements (Phase II) Project to Swinerton Builders (Swinerton). The approval sets in motion a path toward design and construction of certain terminal features in need of modernization.
The awarded project team is comprised of Swinerton Builders, Corgan Associates Inc., Studio One Eleven, and VCA Engineers Inc.

DOT Selects MSCAA as Participant in UAS Integration Pilot Program

U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine L. Chao on May 9, announced that Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority (MSCAA) has been selected as one of 10 participants in the Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Integration Pilot Program, an initiative aimed at shaping the future of drones in America.
MSCAA will partner with the City of Memphis, Agricenter International, the University of Memphis, the Tennessee Department of Transportation Division of Aeronautics, FedEx, GE subsidiaries AirXOS and Avitas, Intel, Flirtey, 901Drones, Express Drone Parts, and ForeverReady Productions. This diverse team will conduct advanced drone operations, including beyond the visual line of sight (BVLOS), operations over people (OOP), and operations at night, in a total of five airspaces, including urban and agricultural areas and secure areas closed to the public. The program is limited to drones weighing 55 pounds or less.

Alaska Airlines Announces Office Expansion Near Sea-Tac Airport

Alaska Airlines unveiled plans May 3, to construct a 128,000-square-foot building near Sea-Tac Airport that will provide a modern and efficient office space for its growing workforce. The new building will be across the street from Alaska's Corporate Headquarters and adjacent to its Flight Training Center, providing office space for approximately 600 Alaska employees in technology, System Operations Control and other key functions.

The Hub will be constructed on a 6.8-acre site that Alaska Airlines acquired in January and where demolition is already underway. Building construction will begin by July and is expected to be completed by early 2020. Redevelopment will also include a new parking garage, surface parking, landscaped paths and other site improvements.

Board Approves State-of-the-Art Police Facility at LAX

On May 3,, the Los Angeles Board of Airport Commissioners (BOAC) authorized the award of phase one of a two-phase design-build contract for the comprehensive engineering, design, demolition, preconstruction and construction for the new Airport Police Facility at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). The contract was awarded to Hansel Phelps.
The new Airport Police Facility will co-locate many of the APD’s functions onto one site. The project is intended to improve the communication and coordination of operations and resources for essential public safety services at LAX. When completed, it will be one of the largest police facilities in the state.

Denver Parking Project Wins IPI Award

Denver International Airport’s (DEN) 61st and Pena Station parking facility was recently honored with the International Parking Institute’s (IPI) Best Design/Implementation of a Surface Parking Lot award.
The airport partnered with Panasonic and Xcel Energy to provide a battery demonstration project that will examine how a battery system can help integration of renewable energy, reliability of the distribution system, voltage management and peak reduction. The structure is owned by DEN, but the solar system is owned by Xcel Energy. The parking lot at 61st and Peña provides convenient, covered parking and a platform to test new technology that promotes sustainable growth and innovation.

Million Air Opens New Hangar at Westchester Airport

County and local officials May 2, joined with executives from Million Air to celebrate the grand opening of Million Air’s new state-of-the-art hangar at its corporate aviation complex at Westchester County Airport. The 52,000-square-foot hangar is part of Million Air’s $80 million expansion and upgrade at the airport.
The two-story hangar features 28-foot height doors capable of housing a Gulfstream 650, which is Gulfstream’s largest business jet. Floors are heated with a high-tech radiant heat system that allows temperatures to be maintained for aircraft and pilots. The new hangar also includes eight customizable offices with storage space. With the completion of the new hangar, Million Air’s complex now has 84,000 square feet of hangar space and 7.25 acres of ramp space.

SJC to Build Four New Gates

The San José City Council on May 1, approved Mineta San José International Airport (SJC) staff’s plan to build an interim facility with four additional boarding gates to be opened in summer 2019.

Interim gates 31-34 will be constructed and connected to Terminal B on the south end. Once open in July 2019, the gates will offer additional hold room space for passengers. The additional gate capacity will also improve flight scheduling flexibility and decrease on-airport delays for SJC airlines to accommodate their current operations and planned growth.

Louis Berger Wins Project Management Contract in Spain

Louis Berger-CEMOSA joint venture was recently awarded a €14 million contract by Aena to provide project management services for the expansion of Palma de Mallorca International Airport in Baleares Islands, Spain. The €300 million investment project will last for 70 months.
The project proposed by Louis Berger will contemplate the extension, renovation and reorganization of the airport's processor building, the A, C and D modules, the associated aircraft parking platforms, and the parking and access areas. The area of the processor building will be extended to the north, increasing the number of existing check-in counters to more than 250. In addition, the automatic baggage handling system and commercial spaces will be expanded and renewed.

Scott Ruch Named CEO of Corgan

Corgan announced Scott Ruch, executive managing principal and sector leader of the firm’s critical facilities practice, as the new chief executive officer. Roel Huinink has been appointed chief executive officer (CEO) of JFKIAT – the company which manages Terminal 4 at John F. Kennedy International Airport.

Board Approves Purchase of 20 Electric Buses for Airside Use at LAX

On April 19, the Los Angeles Board of Airport Commissioners (BOAC) approved the purchase of 20, 60-foot articulating, battery-powered electric buses to be used for airfield guest transportation.
The new buses will replace older, diesel-operated buses, and provide transportation for guests traveling between terminals and gates on the Los Angeles International Airport’s (LAX) airfields.
The new buses will also provide guests with quieter rides that produce no polluting emissions, and Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) anticipates reduced maintenance costs.

Delaware North Begins ‘The Last Straw’ Campaign to Reduce Plastic Waste

Delaware North announced a commitment to reduce plastic waste by scaling back its use of straws at the company’s 200-plus dining locations at 23 airports and travel hubs across the United States. Dubbed “The Last Straw” campaign, the initiative will seek to curb excess plastic waste by offering drinking straws on a request-only basis.
Using Earth Day as a launch date, Delaware North hopes to sustain The Last Straw campaign and cut down on the estimated 8.1 million plastic drinking straws the company served in drinks to guests at airport dining locations in 2017.
