The record-setting U.S. Army Golden Knights aerial demonstration team will display its acclaimed parachuting skills Saturday and Sunday afternoons, April 27 and 28, at the World War II Heritage Days weekend in Peachtree City. Ga. The team performs at more than 100 events per year and has earned 2,148 gold, 1,117 silver, and 693 bronze medals in national and international competition. Team members also have set 348 world records.
World War II Heritage Days is hosted by the Commemorative Air Force (CAF) Dixie Wing at Atlanta Regional Airport (Falcon Field) in Peachtree City.The weekend event will commemorate the 75th anniversary of the D-Day invasion in Europe, including a rare display of three C-47 transport planes that actually participated in the invasion and plan to return to Europe for the anniversary in June. Rides will be available. Other attractions include a variety of historic aircraft, The Liberty Jump team, a T-6 trainer from the original Women Airforce Service Pilot (WASP) program, and a video dome featuring the Tuskegee Airmen story. WWII veterans will be honored throughout the weekend.
WWII Heritage Days is the largest annual 1940s theme event in Georgia. Throughout the weekend, more than 500 volunteers will conduct special events such as Allied and Axis troops in reenactment battles, 1940s music shows, veteran and historian presentations, education displays and activities for children. Saturday evening, the romance and glamor of the Big Band Era will return with “Keep ‘em Flying,” a 1940s-theme hangar dance. The U.S. Army Maneuver Center of Excellence Band (MCoE Band)) from Fort Benning, Ga., will perform big band music at 1 p.m. Sunday.
The CAF Dixie Wing Warbird Museum will recreate the 1940s era with displays of historic aircraft, military vehicles, antique cars and vintage fashion.. PARKING: This year, guests will be directed to park at the nearby Eaton Cooper Corp. lot on Highway 74, with shuttle buses to the event site at the Dixie Wing Warbird Museum. On-site parking will be provided for WWII veterans, with designated areas for golf carts and handicapped guests. Fees (cash only) are $20 per car in the parking area, and $5 per person for golf carts and motorcycles.
