William Duñgo’s love of aviation began when he was young. His mother lived internationally and when his family would take her to the airport, Duñgo said he would be fascinated with the whole airport operations.
“I would always be intrigued about how the airplanes would take off into the air and also the environment of the airport,” he said. “Ever since I’ve been very young I’ve been intrigued by this.”
Duñgo is a professional engineer with 10 years of experience performing traffic impact analyses for major airport improvement programs.
"I have to give credit to my supervisor, Roberto Ramos, who have consistently provided guidance and encouraged me to pursue my passion in my career ever since I was a junior engineer,” he said. “ I told him that I want to focus on airport operations and so one of the first field work he had me perform was counting cars at JFK International Airport in 20-degree weather. The rest is history.”
Having worked extensively on traffic impact studies, capacity analyses and signal timing optimization at New York City’s two largest airports, he has worked with aviation clients to improve air travel in the busiest airport system and most frequently used port of entry in the United States.
Duñgo is currently project manager leading the traffic analysis for the LaGuardia Airport Redevelopment Program for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ). With a focus on expanding transportation access, increasing taxiway space and adding amenities for passengers, the estimated $8 billion project aims to change the multiple fragmented terminal layouts to a connected one.
He is currently managing the off-airport traffic monitoring program, which includes working harmoniously with a talented group of PANYNJ- picked consultants to overcome the challenges of the project.
As a traffic analyst for the John F. Kennedy Airport Delta Airlines Terminal Redevelopment Study, he analyzed scenarios at multiple terminals throughout the airport under existing and future conditions. He provided input in the development of a variety of customized spreadsheet models to support Synchro analysis efforts, including a specialized model to convert airport flight schedules into vehicle trips on the roadway network. These tools were developed to solve existing issues while also helping the team prevent anticipated challenges from escalating.
Before the LaGuardia Airport Redevelopment Programs initiative, Duñgo was a traffic analyst for a traffic conditions studies and frontage analysis for PANYNJ at LaGuardia Airport.
Duñgo also contributed to the development of optimized traffic signal timing plans for all signalized intersections at John F. Kennedy International Airport which improved safety at sequential roadway crossings within the airport.
